GENERAL LABORER/UTILITY WORKER
Construction Department (Pipe Laying Crew)

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs unskilled work in the installation and construction of water and sewer lines and appurtenances; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

TYPICAL TASKS:
Works as a member of a crew installing and repairing water and sewer lines;
Assists with water and sewer taps and service connections;
Makes bores;
Assists with flagging and traffic control operations;
Keeps trucks stocked with necessary equipment, supplies and fuel;
Backfills ditch after repair has been completed or pipe has been laid;
Locates and installs valves;
Draws small maps of valve locations;
Operates truck, tractor, back-hoe, air hammer, tapping machine and mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks;
Installs fire hydrants;
Performs landscaping on property after work is completed;
Assists with wiring residential grinder stations;
Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Some knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of water and/or sewer lines; some knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of water and/or sewer lines and appurtenances; familiar with restraint systems and various fittings; some knowledge in the use of common hand and power tools; some knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods under all weather conditions; ability to use appropriate safety equipment, follow safe work procedures, understand, and comply with Authority policies; ability to perform strenuous manual labor under all weather conditions in the field; ability to lift 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; ability to bend, reach and stand for extended periods of time, climb ladders, twist, sit, kneel, crawl, squat and walk; ability to drive a vehicle daily.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of water and sewer lines.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
General Laborer: Possession of a valid Driver’s License according to State of residence.
Utility Worker: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License according to State of residence.

STARTING SALARY:
Depending on the special requirements above, you may be hired at the levels below:
General Laborer: $16.57+ per hour
Utility Worker: $18.23+ per hour

CAREER PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES:
Title advancements and/or promotions to various positions depend on an individual’s job performance, knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience and other special requirements. There is no guarantee of career progression to these or any other positions at the Authority.
Utility Worker: $18.23+ per hour once in possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License
Senior Utility Worker or Heavy Equipment Operator: $19.65+ per hour
