LAB ANALYST
Wastewater Treatment

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs complex, difficult & skilled technical and administrative work conducting physical/chemical and bacteriological tests. Responsible for day to day operation, maintenance and record keeping of the laboratory relating to wastewater analysis. Does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision.

TYPICAL TASKS:
Performs standard physical/chemical and bacteriological tests associated with wastewater treatment;
Performs quality control testing to maintain laboratory certification through SCDES;
Trains plant operators involved in the sampling & testing of all phases of wastewater throughout the wastewater treatment process and in the proper laboratory QC/QA, procedures & functions;
Analyzes environmental data from wastewater treatment effluent and biosolids for ultimate disposal;
Labels dishes, bottles and related laboratory equipment according to standard instructions;
Records test results accurately and in a timely manner on forms and maintains records on computer;
Receives samples and checks completeness of chain of custody in accordance with SCDES standards and policies;
Cleans and sterilizes glassware, other laboratory equipment and surfaces;
Prepares needed reagents;
Reviews material safety data sheets on chemicals; ensures that chemicals are being handled properly using proper safety equipment;
Checks temperatures daily on all temperature sensitive equipment and records finding;
Performs analysis of treated and untreated domestic sewage;
Calibrates, repairs, and maintains laboratory equipment; ensures all assigned equipment is in working condition;
Maintains records, logs and files and prepares technical and administrative reports in a timely manner
Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the principles, terminology, techniques, equipment and laboratory tests pertaining to analysis of wastewater samples; thorough knowledge of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater for collection, handling and analysis of wastewater, groundwater and wetlands samples; thorough knowledge of current wastewater laboratory techniques; working knowledge of all applicable safety and materials handling regulations and requirements; skilled in the use of email and various other computer programs; ability to use laboratory and related equipment and to compute and record test results; ability to plan work load to meet time requirements; ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees; ability to maintain an organized, clean and efficient laboratory operation; ability to stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to10 pounds constantly; ability to climb stairs, twist, kneel, squat, sit and walk; and ability to drive a vehicle daily.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE;
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with course work in science and laboratory analysis and two years of experience in laboratory analysis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid driver’s license according to state of residence.

• Lab Superintendent: $72,113.60+

THIS POSITION IS OPEN AT THE VEREEN WWTP. SALARY RANGE IS $49,462.40 - $74,193.60. THIS POSITION WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL FILLED.
