WASTEWATER PLANT OPERATOR
East Outlying WWTPs
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs various degrees of work including intermediate to advanced technical work in the operation & maintenance of all wastewater treatment plants within the East Outlying WWTP area. Maintains the aesthetics of facilities. Does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision.
TYPICAL TASKS:
Makes regular tours of plants and equipment observing operational conditions;
Reads and complies with NPDES permits;
Records readings from meters and instruments; analyzes readings and laboratory results;
Checks proper functioning of equipment;
Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, valves chemical feed and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions;
Pumps and dewaters sludge, drains tanks;
Cleans and services pumps, motors, screens and other equipment;
Assists when required in performing preventive maintenance on all plant equipment;
Cleans structures, buildings and basins;
Paints piping and structures as needed;
Sprays weed killer and assists with groundskeeping/landscaping needs at facilities using mowers, cutters, trimmers, etc.;
Operates farm machinery and associated equipment (tractor, backhoe, pressure washer, etc.) to maintain facilities;
Calibrates dissolved oxygen, pH and chlorine meters;
Secures plant site after normal working hours;
Collects permit required and process control samples and analyzes sample results to determine process adjustments that are required to ensure plants are operating as required to meet NPDES permit requirements;
Inputs data on computers, spreadsheets, emails and calendars;
Files and maintains records;
Performs weekend plant checks and on-call response after hours and on holidays on a rotating basis and responds to emergencies as needed;
Performs tasks related to all GSWSA functions as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Specific knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a wastewater treatment plant; general knowledge of hydraulic, chemical, biological and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations; general knowledge of laboratory operations, equipment & procedures; specific knowledge of occupational hazards & adherence to all established safety policies, programs & procedures; general knowledge of computers, Microsoft Excel program and emails; ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read and understand O&M manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and operator training texts to obtain the highest level of operator certification; ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain various types of records; ability to perform preventive and corrective maintenance on facilities and equipment, ability to write legibly; ability to perform manual and semi-skilled labor for extended periods of time; ability to move and traverse obstacles at work sites; ability to perform manual and semi-skilled labor under all weather and environmental conditions in the field; ability to work safely and make visual and audible observations day and night; ability to lift 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; ability to walk, sit and stand sometimes for extended periods of time; ability to reach, bend, climb ladders, twist, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, squat, pull and push; ability to operate a paddle boat; and ability to drive a vehicle daily.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid driver’s license according to state of residence.
Depending on the level of licensure, you may be hired at the levels below:
• Wastewater Plant Operator Trainee – No License, Possession of a South Carolina Class D Biological WW Treatment License
• Associate Wastewater Plant Operator – Possession of a South Carolina Class C Biological WW Treatment License
• Wastewater Plant Operator – Possession of a South Carolina Class B Biological WW Treatment License
• Senior Wastewater Plant Operator – Possession of a South Carolina Class A Biological WW Treatment License
STARTING SALARY:
Depending on the special requirements above, you may be hired at the levels below:
• Wastewater Plant Operator Trainee – $18.23+ per hour
• Associate Wastewater Plant Operator – $19.65+ per hour
• Wastewater Plant Operator – $21.62+ per hour
• Senior Wastewater Plant Operator – $25.64+ per hour
