WATER PLANT OPERATOR
Bull Creek SWTP

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs intermediate technical work in the operation and maintenance of a surface water treatment plant, pumping and purification equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

TYPICAL TASKS:
Performs routine visual checks of plant for proper process functioning and operations of equipment;
Records readings from meters, SCADA and instruments;
Analyzes data and laboratory results to determine if process adjustments are needed;
Adjusts motors, pumps, valves, and chemical feed equipment and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions;
Performs chemical and bacteriological laboratory tests on raw water, treated water, settled water, filtered water, and finished water on routine basis as required;
Monitors and adjusts the SCADA system; prepares a variety of reports and records such as daily operations reports, daily flow reports, routine plant check reports, chemical analysis records, bacteriological records and lab meter standardization records;
Performs a variety of duties necessary in the operations of the system such as adjusting flow rates to meet system demands, monitoring the raw water quality changes and making chemical treatment adjustments to insure high quality potable water production, preparing chemical solution batches, backwashing filters, adjusting sludge withdrawals from clarifiers, cleaning intake screens, adjusting gravity sludge thickener chemical feed rates
Adjusts settings on chemical feed systems as needed in order to control proper water pH, coagulant dosage, corrosion control dosage, fluoridation dosage, proper disinfection dosage and other chemicals in use;
Makes valve and pump speed adjustments necessary to control flow of water to maintain proper finished water reservoir levels;
Insures that appropriate chemicals are delivered and placed in proper containers;
Works 12-hour shifts to assure plant operation 24 hours/day, 365 days/year;
Performs routine inspections of the raw water pump station;
Monitors closely and informs plant supervisory staff of chemical inventory on a routine basis;
Assists the Maintenance Staff in performing preventive maintenance, lawn maintenance and minor repairs to plant equipment as needed;
Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment and methods used in water treatment and pumping operations; general knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with water plant and related activities and of necessary safety precautions; general knowledge of chemistry as applied to water treatment; ability to adjust water pumps, chemical feed machines and other water plant equipment; ability to check the operation of equipment and to detect defects in operation; ability to take accurate readings, to keep routine records and to make arithmetical computations; ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds; ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; and ability to work indoors and outdoors under all weather conditions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid driver’s license according to state of residence.
Depending on the level of licensure, you may be hired at the levels below:
• Water Plant Operator Trainee – No License, Possession of a South Carolina Class D Water Treatment License
• Associate Water Plant Operator – Possession of a South Carolina Class C Water Treatment License
• Water Plant Operator – Possession of a South Carolina Class B Water Treatment License
• Senior Water Plant Operator – Possession of a South Carolina Class A Water Treatment License

STARTING SALARY:
Depending on the special requirements above, you may be hired at the levels below:
• Water Plant Operator Trainee – $18.23+ per hour
• Associate Water Plant Operator – $19.65+ per hour
• Water Plant Operator – $21.62+ per hour
• Senior Water Plant Operator – $25.64+ per hour
